Lubrication of chain in aqueous environment 2

We use a slat conveyor to transport the vehicles while water is sprayed onto the vehicles.

All components of the chain except bushes are stainless steel and the chain is not lubricated.

Once in ~3 months we come accross some broken pins !. Does anyone have any practical experience about the operation & maintenance of chains in aqueous environment ? Is it necessary to lubricate the chain in such conditions, or are there any other methods to reduce the friction and chain wear ?

Hardened steel chain links used in our paint shop conveyor use a Kluber Lubrication product called Barrierta L55/2 which is not only water resistant but heat resistant too.

Yes, hardened steel chain would last longer wear wise, but it would also rust more. Stainless steel has low carbon, which makes it less hardenable. It is the carbon in steel that reacts to form rust. In a water enviroment that is probably your biggest concern.

You could try a grease to start. Perhaps Plasma coating the chain with Teflon Impregnated Titanium Nitride?
