We used to be able to buy long (~ 1" thread length ) Cast Iron pipe plugs. They were to NPT gauge somewhere in the middle of the thread area if I remember correctly. We are looking for 1/4-3/8 and 1/2" NPT versions. Just so you know, we use these to plug castings for repair work.
Does anyone out there know where I can currently buy such an animal?
Thanks in advance for any leads.

Cast Iron plugs are relatively scarce, but malleable iron are readily available. Any piping or plumbing supply company should have malleable iron and maybe some older cast iron ones.

Either one of these companies should have what you need.

Unclesyd,
Thanks for the reply, both of those sources offer only the standard length 3/4 Taper plugs. The ones I am looking for are approximately twice as long on the threaded portion as a standard plug.
And yes, I believe they are Malleable Iron, sorry for the confusion.

I'll get a chance to check tomorrow if anyone has them available. I worked in a foundry that made the plug i think you are looking for. Its now a Wal-Mart.

You may have to get a shop to fabricate them from bar. A little expensive but maybe the only route.
