I need to write a report concerning soil improvement of foundation using preloading, can u guys provide any sources where I can get the details of preloading? Such as the application, availability, procedure, costs, time, limitation, etc..
Thanks!!

You'll need to check older references - from the 1940's through the 1960's. Start with ASCE Journal of Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering and Geotechnique. Also contact some of the wick drain manufacturers; they should have a pretty good library of relevant references.

What is your project like? Location? Site conditions?

No. I am just working for the literature review of this technique. So it would be the overview of it.

ASCE published a book of papers entitled "Placement and Improvement of Soils to Support Structures". In that publication there are two papers on preloading:

"Precompression for Improving Foundation Soils"
by Stanley J. Johnson, ASCE Journal of Soil Mechanics and Foundations, Vol.96, No. SM1, January, 1970

"Preloading for Heavy Industrial Installations"
by Panaghiotis C. Kotzias and Aris C. Stamatopoulos,
ASCE Journal of Soil Mechanics and Foundations, Vol.95, No. SM6, November, 1969

You will have to contact ASCE to see if they are still available.

Hope this is of some help!

Great!! I will check the journal in library. For sure I can get it.
Thank u very much!

I'll confirm that Johnson was "my" paper bible on the subject. Should be in your university library - or else you can contact "old" geo firm who would probably have all the past journals of ASCE. I believe that Tomlinson in his foundation book also presents some good information on preloading. If I find any other references I'll advise.

Dear coolcool
I would like to propose 3 references which I remember right now:

1- "Advanced Soil Mechanics", Braja M. Dos.
It is mostly a text book but the preloading and the related (and important) part which is the theory of consolidation has been fairly well elaborated (as far as I remember). It is also recommended to refer to the discussion on the CU tests and ...It might have at least one example by which you may get more familiar with hand calculations of preloading under the load of an embankment which is carried out as a function of time (using superposition).

2- "Engineering Principles of Ground Modification", Manfred R. Hausman.
Not a very unique one but it presents the Asaoka's diagram which is helpful for improvement assesment.

3- "Improvement Techniques of Soft Ground in Subsiding ...?", Bergado and ...? (? means I don't remember the remainder!!!)
As far as I remember it focuses more on vertical drains.

However if you need more specific references, please let me know.
