linking of part family to external spread sheet.

i want to drive the value of a cell in part family from an external excel file. When both the spread sheet files are open and i make any change to the source file the value gets updated in the part family. But if the part family spread sheet is closed and i make any change in the source excel sheet then when i open the part family spread sheet it does not update. Apart from that the link between the two spread sheet gets automatically broken.

Please some one guide me.

The part family spreadsheet appears for all the world to be embedded inside the UG file. How UG stores the data is not clear but it probably goes some way to explaining why links to external files would be broken.

You can certainly save a copy of the file make external changes to it and then paste across the values when next you open the part family if that is what you wish to to.

Actually I am managing with a similar technique like what u have suggested. But it would have been of great help if the part family values could be driven without any breakage of link from external excel sheets..

Hi rk,

I guess you might have used Data->Import External Data->Import Data in Excel to achieve this. To establish the value refresh link, you should check ON "Enable Background refresh" and "Refresh Data on file open" in the properties option while setting the import data options.
