I often receive dwg files from architects / engineers that have duplicate lines stacked on top of each other. I assume this is from multiple xrefs on top of one another. Is there a command in Autocad that will delete the unnecessary lines? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yes, the "overkill" command. Assuming Express Tools is installed.

I heard also that in the days of pen plotters, draftsmen would draw multiple lines to achieve different line thicknesses.

When the pen got to one of these lines, the pen would go back and forth and the ink would spread, thus getting thicker!
