Hello!
Speaking conceptually/ theoretically, when should the deformations be smaller: in a linear time history analysis or in a nonlinear time history analysis? Let's assume everything else is exactly the same in both analyses, just the type of analysis changes.

NonLinear TH analysis generally considers the softening effect of stiffness on nodes. Thus, larger displacements are likely to be monitored compared to linear TH analysis.

Thanks for your answer JasonMcKee71. Well, that's the case when I analyze the structure in OpenSees with fiber elements (distributed plasticity). However, when I analyze the same structure in Sap2000, I amazingly get larger displacements for the linear case. This is driving me crazy. What could be the cause?
