Limit JT save to work part only

I have recently stumbled on a large assembly that I'm working on and save times have been brutal (around 2 hours). I am linked to Teamcenter (NX 11.0.2.7 and Teamcenter 11). I noticed that when I uncheck Save JT in the save options that it only takes 5 minutes to save. What is it doing on JT save?!? Is it going out and saving, or trying to save on released parts, a JT file for each subpart in all the subassemblies? There is no geometry at the top level assembly so there isn't even a JT file being created on the top level part that I'm working on that takes so long to save if JT Save is turned on...

I use JT files for loading lightweight - is there a way to limit JT save creation on only the work part? Any thoughts on what is going on?
