Light Distribution Classification of Luminaires

I've got a report to do asking me for an explanation of the light distribution classification of luminaires, but I have no idea what that means. I've been looking around for hours on what to even write, any help? Thanks

GE used to have a great design guide, but I can't find anything like that on its current website. This document (

shows Type I, II, III, IV, and V light distribution patterns with a short description.
