Layers - Placing features on layers

I have several parts that have been created with the merge command. When I bring the part into a drawing the lines are purple. I have been told that I can put the merge on a layer and turn off the layer so that the lines will not show. How do I do that???? I've been trying with no success.
Do you put the merge on a layer in the part, turn off the layer in the drawing? Completely lost here. Have used layers very little, in fact never.
