Ladder cage

Can anyone tell me where I can find either a drawing of, or a specification for, a standard ladder cage that is required around high ladders to protect against fall?

I am not a big proponent of ladder cages other than you will know exactly where the body fell.

I prefer double lanyards or YO-YO's - self retracting lanyards. These will guarantee that you fall only so far - YO-YO's being the best.

OSHA specifies certain features of caged ladders, which can be found online in Code of Federal Regulations.

These specifications in turn are based on older versions of certain ANSI documents. Several years ago, OSHA issued a "proposed" updated standard based on newer versions of the ANSI documents, but it never has been officially adopted. Search through some of the OSHA interpretations for information on the issue.

In any case, OSHA specifies some details, such as width of hoops, but doesn't specify other details, such as thickness of hoops, or loads for which they are designed.

Note that ladders for certain industries, such as construction, have different standards than the "General Industry" standard.

Buy the "PIP" specification for ladders and cages. It contains fully-detailed and calculated sketches that include material sizes and anchoring requirements. PIP's are peer-reviewed, and fully meet OSHA and 'good industrial practices'. Well worth the money. Among othere TechStreet.com sells them.

I have looked now at the OSHA standard thru the link that SrVaro sent and it is particularly helpful, although I am not sure if there might be another standard here in Ontario that deals with ladders. I will also look at PIP.

No - just different. Like Cal-OSHA Have to deal with it all the time!!

For the local Canadian stuff, take a look at the OHS act/regulations for the province in question. It will have the local ladder requirements. There may be additional guidelines available as well, so look at the website of the worksafe organization for the province and/or call them up and ask.

I actually think that the Alberta one just straight up says that using the PIP ladder is fine. Don't quote me on that though and it doesn't tell you anything about what the standard is in Ontario.

I don't think Ontario's OHS stuff was laid out particularly well last time I saw.
