I would like to use SW to design linkages. Still a SW rookie, I don't know of any native kinematics capability; if this is so, what would be good add-on software package to use?

Now, COSMOS Motion is excellent, but I'm thinking you want more of a cookie cutter app to your kinematics problems.

The standard Mates in SW allows you to manually manipulate mechanisms. It also has Collision Detection capabilities.

The Animator add-in allows for automated movement & recording of AVIs.

It depends on what level of kinematics/animation you need.

If you are only doing layouts at this stage, then you should be able to achieve that using sketches and blocks - use design intent to get the sketch to work as you need it. If you create this sketch in an assembly, then you should be able to mate your components to it and check clearances etc. It can be an advantage to keep it simple!

Hope this helps
