Just how necessary is a hydraulic accumulator? 1

I've decided to build a relatively simple mobile hydraulic system as an educational experience. Essentially, I'm using a 3000 psi power unit, two cylinders and two 4-way solenoid valves to control the cylinders. Eventually, I may attempt to test its impact against a rigid material such as a brick wall (But that may be too dangerous). I would definitely use an accumulator under ordinary circumstances, if at least to reduce back shock, but my problem is that I am trying to keep the budget as low as possible. Buying an accumulator, an accumulator charging and gauging kit and nitrogen gas will almost double the cost of the project.

So, is it worth it to include an accumulator?

An accumulator is not mandatory, so if you can live without one, don't fit one.

So how do you know if you can live without one? It depends on what you are trying to do and we haven't got a good description but if you are trying to make a robotic servo system you should have an accumulator. If you are just slamming hydraulic actuators back and forth with bang - bang valves then don't bother.
