Hi all,
The attached is an image of a concrete column in a parking garage that has a steel top like a jack post. Wondering if anyone knows anything about this "jack-post"; properties, why it was used, capacities, ...etc.
Thanks.

In my opinion, a jack is a temporary support, not a permanent fixture. So whether its working or not, it should be replaced with a permanent, structural member. I certainly would not seal a drawing where placing this contraption is the permanent fix.

PhamENG:
That is very good speculation. I thought may when they poured the concrete piers, they didn't know how to pour it to the underside of the beam, so they stopped at this height and used the adjustable post.
dik,
No, no, and no. And for the testing and replacement with HSS, if I need to do that, I would prefer to cast new concrete piers as a replacement for the existing ones, but full length from the top of the wall to the underside of the beam.

Yup... might be easier and less costly to use an HSS stub.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Robbiee - why not design new round columns to replace the originals? It's pretty obvious where they were. Unless they get in the way of traffic flow (which may be another indicator of why they were removed).

My guess is that if you investigate your load path through that wall a little more closely, it won't look too good.

50k? That's pretty steep. Why the shoring? I would just cast the posts into your new column.

Thanks all,
We will do a bit more digging and if I find anything useful, I will share it.
