Why is it that I can only open 1/3 of the number of files in SW2008 than in SW2008 before i get a short on resourses warning? Is this program a memory hog?

The only reason for upgrading SW is because versions are not backwards compatable. Otherwise I would be upgrading systems on my business plan timetable - not based on Solidworks business plan on screwing everyone every year for upgrades whether they want them or not!

Only being able to open 10 parts (2007 or 2008) is not "running fine". Your system is severely crippled. I routinely have about 20 windows and a couple hundred files open at once with no problems. What is your business plan for upgrading systems? Every five years? 1GB of RAM has been on the (very) low side for at least that long.

-handleman, CSWP (The new, easy test)

Pentium D 2.8 Ghz 1 GB Ram

The file sizes are about .5 meg each

Hate to say it, but either the way the parts were modeled sucks or your system just sucks.

Considering how small the models are and how many parts you can open, you have some serious problems. Was an anti-virus running during the installation process? Consider re-installing or try this tip:
As cheap as RAM is today, you ought to at the very least double it. Also, is your graphics card approved? (not did it work in a previous version)

The computer was reformatted to do a system complete clean up,
Great ... you can't get any cleaner than that.

then 2007 was installed. About a week later, I finally got around to installing 2008 when a client sent me files that needed 2008. I started the install from DVD, but was told by the software right up front that a newer SP was avaialbe over the web so downloaded SP 4.0) off off the SW website.

What possible installation problems would that give me?
Unless you are doing a multi-install, plenty.
Did you completely remove SW07 first?
Did you do a multi-install? (i.e. have SW07 and SW08 installed)

My PC is not running desktop search
That's good.

Video card is approved - remember I was running SW 2007 flawlessly for about a year on the exact same system.
Approved for SW07 maybe ... but is it (and the driver) approved for SW08. The requirements change for every version.

I did however make one change in recent weeks - new monitor but i am running the same resolution 1680 x 1050 - but again SW2007 runs fine.
That shouldn't affect SW08 performance.

What is the /3GB switch you are referring to? Where is it and what does it do?
Download the 3gb_switch_part_one,_two,_&_three.pdf from
There are oodles of general sites, articles, blogs & documents on google if you use /3gb switch as the search words.

If you decide to re-install SW08 (recommended), make sure the anti-virus is disabled.

1. I have experienced issues when installing on a new machine and installed the latest service pack. I now always install from the DVD then down load and upgrade to the latest service pack.

2. Check to see what addins are being loaded. You maybe loading more apps in the back ground in 08 than you were with 07.

3. I have to agree with others here that your machine seems pretty obsolete. I have not purchased a pc for home use (surfing the web, reading email, quicken) with less than 1 gig of ram in 5 years. The min. requirements listed for 2009 is 1gb. I would not think of working on a min requirement computer, but then again I really hate when I can think faster than the computer. If I have to wait for software it is time to upgrade the hardware.

Well for all of you RAM hounds - 3 gig still doesnt do it!

I tried it - yes it is a bit faster - barely noticeable - but it still hangs.

I think I am going to have to uninstall it and take GRFs suggestion and instal from CD then download SPs -

I usually disable Anti virus on any installation, but the installation of SW2008 off of their site took so long before that i wonder if the timer on disabling Norton Anti Virus ran out before everything was loaded.

You don't need to disable the AV for the download ... just when installing.

If you have already downloaded the SP, a copy of it should still be on your system.

The attached is a very useful uninstalling utility once supplied by SolidWorks.

And double-check CorBlimeyLimey's suggestion of updating the graphics driver to what the SW site recommends for v2008. I'm betting it's different than the v2007 driver, and graphics issues are huge with SolidWorks--need to use the right card and driver to get things done without problems.

There is plenty of negative feedback among users regarding v2008 for various reasons. We skipped that version here (sits on a shelf, paid for), and that's the first we've ever done anything like that. Like Chris, I like to have access to the newest feature set in the newest version, but I didn't see much I really needed from v2008 in the What's New documentation or the VAR roll-out. Bummer. Lots of things I'm eager to try from v2009, however. I think maybe SolidWorks did a little more user-based homework on that version--let's hope so.

Well my antivirus is Norton 2008 which has been approved according to the link JMary sent. So - can the installation still be the problem?

Anything is possible ... it's just less likely now.

I have always had excellent results by disabling thew AV. I think I will continue to do so.

Upgrading from SW07 to SW08 without doing a clean uninstall-reinstall (of SW) is more likely to cause problems.
Installing SP0 then updating to SP4 should give the best results.

Sometimes a rogue/lemon computer can cause all sorts of weird problems. I do the IT for about 10 very similar PCs, and am constantly having problems with one in particular (no SolidWorks involved on that machine). It takes just one faulty component to create totally illogical conflicts with some software.

Further Update on this problem

I upgraded to 3 GB ram

I refomatted my comp again

Installed SW 2008 off of CD - Norton Antivirus was not even installed on the computer at the time I installed SW 2008

Installed latest service packs off of the website

Upgraded Comp to 3 GB Ram

RESULT

No difference from before !

SW 2008 runs perfectly fine as long as you only have 4 files open. These could even be complicated assemblies. As soon as I open a 5th part file - as small as a bushing -the system bogs down. It takes about 2 minutes to load a bushing as the 5th file, and then another 2 minutes to close the 5th file. Then the system runs fine again. - Unless you open another 5th file.

The 5th file could be anything - it does the same thing.

Any more insite as to how to stop this frustration?

Ooops, sorry I just re-read your post and realised you said you had upgraded to 3GB RAM. My two remaining brain cells interpreted that as you were using the /3GB switch.

There are some graphicscards, not ceritified, like the ATI radeon series, that is only supporting a limited number of open windows at the same time. Just stabbing in the dark, but...
