Why is it that I can only open 1/3 of the number of files in SW2008 than in SW2008 before i get a short on resourses warning? Is this program a memory hog?
SolidWorks has always been a memory hog, it just consumes more with each interation, which is why hardware requirements keep going up. '08, in particular, was worse with all the new graphics.
I'm using '08 and can have a 2200 part assembly open, along with sub-assemblies, sub-sub assemblies and part files without a problem. It's not the software, chances are it's your hardware. What are your system specs?
Just dont count on meeting deadlines, working throughout the day without crashes or not losing work. That all comes bundled standard with your copy of SW Office Premium Deluxe SP8.0

Why do people feel the need to take things to the extreme? No, you don't need 10 gigs of RAM. Unless you have 3 seats of SolidWorks, you're also not coughing up $4500/year. I suppose you could be buying a new seat every year, but that wouldn't be very smart. As for "no features worth having", that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. Personally, I don't agree with you, but that's my opinion.
What about your video card? Is it approved? Did you update the drivers for 2008?
If you NEED to do engineering work you should expect to NEED a good workstation. Solidworks doesn't need to accommodate people running outdated consumer hardware. 1 Gig of ram is ridiculous when 4gigs costs less than 100 dollars, and is the most worthwhile upgrade you can make. Its the cost of doing business, you should factor that into your business plan that you will have to continually upgrade machines as time goes on. Thankfully, we have tax deductions.
That said, I wish it was faster too, but I really wish they would fix all their video card compatibility problems first.
The computer was reformatted to do a system complete clean up, then 2007 was installed. About a week later, I finally got around to installing 2008 when a client sent me files that needed 2008. I started the install from DVD, but was told by the software right up front that a newer SP was avaialbe over the web so downloaded SP 4.0) off off the SW website.
How much cleaner than that install can it get? What possible installation problems would that give me?

Video card is approved - remember I was running SW 2007 flawlessly for about a year on the exact same system.
I did however make one change in recent weeks - new monitor but i am running the same resolution 1680 x 1050 - but again SW2007 runs fine.
What is the /3GB switch you are referring to? Where is it and what does it do?
