IRC Wall Bracing Requirements for Load Bearing CMU Walls?

Hello All:

Was wondering if anyone has any idea of where in IRC 2009 are provisions for Wall bracing of CMU walls?. My thinking is that wall bracing reqs regarding R602.1 were for wood or steel framing walls, but plan examiner is requiring this for a CMU construction. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Structure is Single family residence 2 story and partially grouted 4" cmu walls with 4" stone has been specified. 3000 s.f. total area.

If considering safety during construction, look at documents from the MCAA (Masonry Contractors Association of America) regarding bracing. There may also may be documents/TEK Notes from the NCMA (National Concrete Masonry Association) on the subject. They are not written in code language because they relate to construction methods, but they may be acceptable or re-written into a enforceable document. The model codes are frequently driven by politics.

280# per foot minimum or the seismic value calculated for parts of a structure, whichever is greater. In ASCE 7-05 this is found in section 12.11.2, and similar related sections, not the IBC.

5 psf minimum interior wind pressure could figure in here too.

In my 2003 IRC, section R606.11.2.2.1, it specifies a minimum lateral load of 200#/ft with connections no further apart than four feet. It also specifies no cross-grain bending to any ledgers in the connections.
