Hi folk - I apologize this is long, but I'd appreciate the input/clarification on the International Residential Code's (IRC) construction joint requirements for concrete walls. Specifically, it appears that they are allowed at "points of lateral support", or at the mid 1/3 point between "points of lateral support". Anyone know exactly what the reason for this is???
I'm looking at putting a construction joint at the point between my basement walls and above grade walls. That way I can pour the basement walls and block out a 4-inch wide by 15-inch tall ledge for my flooring system. Then I can put in basement floor and first floor (my points of lateral support), backfill around the perimeter and then pour my above grade floors (seems like it will make it easier to construct the above grade walls this way).
Due to the lack of pictures or any deeper explanations, I'm not sure EXACTLY how one could put a construction joint right at the intersection of a point of lateral support. There wouldn't be any way to put in anchor bolts for ledger boards to hold a flooring system by that method, and there would be no way to do it my way to set the flooring system before pouring the above grade stuff either.
My way would put the construction joint in the wall just above the first floor. Walls will be reinforced type. Any suggestions/clarifications would be greatly appreciated!!
