ip 55 type rating for shaft seals

It seems the IP XX ratings are for electrical enclosures.
Are there similar ratings for sealing equipment with rotating shafts? I've seen Motor nomenclature like "open drip proof" and " car wash" duty. Is that all there is?

The IEEE rating usually points specifically to motor enclosures, as the definitions are called out in the NEMA motor standard.

Alot of pump users are aware of this standard, even on the other areas of the pump, not just the motors. They will use these ratings on more than just the motor enclosure.

If you research the IP ratings a bit further, you can see that they can equate to the nomenclature above. I would consider something that can pass the IP 6 rating for water to be able to withstand a car wash hose. A IP 7 water rating would be that seal which does not allow any water in (very hard to do as the IEEE 841 specification calls out a non-contact seal.

Drip proof is usually an IP rating of 1 or 2 for water, they are called out more in depth in the NEMA standard.
