Hi
I have an interview coming up for a job that requires me to know how to write an geotechnical interpretive report from soil test data (strength, consolidation, compaction, soil classification etc) . The report will be used by foundation designers on site.
Is there somewhere I can get an example of this kind of report, or a set of guidelines, so that I can be confident about what is expected of me come the interview?
Thanks
Mike

I would contact a local geotechnical engineer. This is one of their primary "products" of service that they develop for structures. They could perhaps get you started and see what this type of report looks like.

I agree with JAE. One other source you might use is the Association of Soil and Foundation Engineers ( They have guidelines on report preparation with particular emphasis on loss and liability prevention (your prospective employer will be impressed if you are already thinking about protecting his liability!!).

Good luck.

I agree with both--ASFE has a recommended report format (which will not cover all possibilities, but is a good start). ASFE has a website with member firms listed by state. Try to find out who the competent, well-respected geotechnical firms are in your area, and see if they can give you a sample report or reporting guidelines. Getting a sample report from a consultant that doesn't know what they are doing will not help you any, and can get you off on the wrong foot. A few calls to major architects and/or structural engineers in your area should help you locate a competent geotechnical consultant.
