I'm sure that this is an easy question for most, but I am wondering how an internal spline is cut. For that matter, how is an external spline cut.

Internal splines are often broached. They could be cut in a shaping machine at a pinch. The world's your lobster for external splines- they could be rolled, cut in a shaper machine, milled, or I suppose even carved out with a chisel. Basically any way you can make a gear.

Cheers
