Hi lifesaviours,
I would like you to advise me on the applicable rise rate (velocity) of an internal Floating roof when filling a tank. A certain manufacturer replied as follows : " There is no standard as such for the rise rate of a Internal Floating Roof when filling a tank. All we make sure of, or the customer is aware of, is that the inlet velocity of the liquid pumped in is reduced to less than 1m/sec."
Is this the only limitation? I think that the rise rate is significant as well. Does anybody have experience on this ?
Your insights would be highly appreciated!!!

You should know the Gal/min flow rate and the area of tank roof. You then can figure the rate of rise.
The flow rate could vary with the head of oil in the tank. Try Getting a pump curve and plot a system curve. if the pump is a positive displacement pump it is not hard. if not pos. displacement it may require more study. As the head increases the flow will be less for variable pumping system.
The 1m/sec is so the roof won't tilt.

I would think the inlet velocity would be the only limitation- for static, for turbulence under the roof, etc.

Gbratis,

I remember seeing some discussions about this in the past but couldn't remember where. Anyway, I found this on the internet...

which reminded me about the Aboveground Storage Tank forum.

Here's a couple of discussion threads from there you might find of interest...
look for the thread labeled
"Rate of roof rise in floating roof tanks"

and

look for the thread labeled
"Inital Fill Rate Recommendation API 2016"

Thanks EGT01 you hit the jackpot!!!!!!!
