Hi,

Im looking at a 2 Bay portal span about 30m double bay (ie 60m overall bay). Can the internal column (each frame) be designed to take moment or as a prop to the frame.

Any Thought?

Vinny,

The contibution of the middle column is proportionate to its stiffness. If you can only get an 8" column in the middle and they are 30" on the outside then there is very little point in making them fixed.

Usually the client wants the flexibility of smaller columns in the center.

Don't you need to consider unbalanced snow load on the roof of the portal ? This will mean that the central column will be subject to axial load and moment.

The center column will only accept moment if it is rigidly connected to the rest of the portal. If there is a hinge at the top of this column, it will only take axial load.
