I am trying to figure out the correct method of getting a body part of the part file into a drawings without having the entire part inserted. I've only managed to hide the un-needed parts but I wonder if theres a better method for this.
Instead of Hide, you should Suppress the features in the part model that you don't want to appear in the Drawing.

Parent Child relationships will be created by referencing geometry from another body or by applying Mates or dimensioning.

one thing you forgot CBL is "relationships" when in a sketch.
Example:
You start a sketch and make a feature
The parent is the "Sketch" and the child is the "Feature"
Because the sketch was there before the feature.
Think of it like you parents - You would be here if it wasn't for them - Something in SW - A feature can't exist without a sketch. - One feature maybe dependent on another. So you can check parent/child relationships by RMB the feature and select "Parent/Child"
Sounds like you're working with a multi-body part...
In this case - you can INSERT FEATURES DELETE-BODY.
This is "supressable" with configurations.
If you're not using a muiti-body part - you'll have to roll-back & re-define your features so make it so. I always use multi-body parts whenever I can... just in case.
Hope this helps...
