Inlet Behind Retaining Wall

Any thoughts on the best wall to have an inlet behind a concrete retaining wall? We are planning on having a valley gutter behind the wall and probably the best way to drain it is to put an inlet behind the wall and pipe it under the wall to a roadway curb inlet.

How tall and how long is the retaining wall? Will the wall be CIP or MSE? If CIP you have many more options. Can you direct the flow behind the wall to the end of the wall and use a spillway or chute to direct it to an area inlet or other type?

I would not recommend putting pipes under the wall.

The wall will be cast in place concrete and is about 100' long and 5' tall at it's tallest point. We are able to get the valley gutter to drain to the end of the wall but there isn't a good place to put an inlet at the end of the wall as it will be a slope with no good place to tie into.

Consider pitching your grading back to a low point ten feet off the wall and putting the inlet there instead. Might add a few inches to the wall, but make the whole thing tie together better.

I've put pipes below walls before. Coordinate with the wall designer on the footings. Sometimes we'll sleeve it, sometimes we'll do DIP. Check with your municipality, they may not like it, or they may have a particular way they want it done.

A sketch of the plan and section may be helpful. I deal with these peckin ret walls all the time, and its easy for the wall designer to design around a pipe. If you can get it to surface drain that is always best, imho.
