Increase Pressure 2

Hi Fellows,
I have to increase a to the filter line pressure from 4 bars to 7 bars. What's better to purchase a new centrifulgal pump or try to modify its rotor?

You wouuld need to determine a few things, but your idea is a good one. Look to see what the existing impeller size is and what the maximum size is for the pump as recommended by the manufacturer. Will the maximum size work for your requirements? You will have to look at the motor, foundation, vibration analysis, and basically everything else associated with the system just like you were designing a new pump to see if it works too. Consider the age of the pump, is it time to replace it anyway? Look at the wear on the pump definately before you make the decision to reuse it, you don't want any surprises to your design when you take the pump apart to retrofit it.

The short answer, if you are confident that the records for the pump design allow upsizing and everything is in good shape, try it. If you have even the slightest doubt, design a replacement.

You might like also to take notice of the need for an increase in motor size as your power requirements would have gone up. This may mean a new baseplate, cables, motor starter etc. Sharing knowledge is a way to immortality

If you are using the largest impeller available for your pump then you will most likely be buying another pump/motor combination. I would recommend if you buy a new pump you may want to buy one that the impeller is only about 80% of max available for that pump housing and rate the motor HP for the max impeller size. By doing this the next time you need to increase flow or pressure all you will need is a larger impeller.

Another possibility is a VSD or resized pulleys if you have enough HP.
