All,

We have a design that is in effect a face to face 'O' ring seal. The client requirements is that the faces are inconel coated. What is the requirements for inconel coating? i.e. The 'O' ring grooves will have to be oversized, coated with inconel and then re-machined. How thick is a typical inconel coating? I read that it is a very difficult material to machine. What is the machining requirements?

Can anyone direct me to a website or supply some information relating to inconel coatings and machining of this material?

Inconel is a tradename for a range of nickel-based superalloys from Special Metals. I am not aware of any coating applications for these grades, but perhaps I am just ignorant on this point. Special Metals has a number of publications available on their website, including one with information on machining:

I have heard of Inconel coating. Though typically I only deal with the material in wire form, it can be used as a thermal protectant spray. I found a link that kind of talks about it...

As far as coating thickness requirements, I would talk with someone that applies this coating and see what they reccomend for good coverage and work that thickness into your design.

Normally you can spray an overlay on or what a lot of people do is put on a weld overlay with Inconel then machine to desired profile. I have done this on excanger gasket faces in the past.
