Importing geometry changes Part name (adds an extra file extension)

Hello

Has anyone else come across this with 2007 SP4?

I have a part and its saved as "Part1.SLDPRT"

Now, I import an iges file that is all curves (sketch entities) and after I do a save, SolidWorks adds a ".sldprt" at the end of the file name.

Now the part's file name is: "Part1.SLDPRT.sldprt"

In my folder with where the part is saved, I have:
Part1.SLDPRT
Part1.SLDPRT.sldprt (most current)

I don't recall this happening in SP3 and lower or any previous version of SolidWorks. Is this a known bug?

I expect is has something to do with the old extension being upper case and the behavior of windows when the option “Hide extensions for known file types” is selected.
Did you do a save or a save as?

Let me get this straight...
You have a part (Part1.SLDPRT) that you import as an iges file? So, going off of that assumption, the file would have been Part1.SLDPRT.iges, right? If so, then I'd say SolidWorks is behaving in the expected manner. It's taking an iges file and converting it. No problems.

It could be the file extension option in windows. I will check on that.

I start a new part and hit Save. The file is now called Part1.SLDPRT

Now, I IMPORT (Insert>Features>Imported) an iges file and then hit save. Now my part is named: Part1.SLDPRT.sldprt

The top of my solidworks window displays the part name and extension. By default it should be uppercase, but when I import an iges file, it adds a lowercase extension to the part name.

What I do now is just do a save-as command after I import an iges file, and I delete off the extra extension...Its just that I have to remember to do this everytime.

I should be moving on to 2008 in the next few days, I will report back if this issue still persists.

When I "import" an IGES, With nothing open, I simply file>open and change the filetype to .IGS. Will this method work for you?

That method (opening iges files from the start) would not work in my case because I already have a part file with features, I'm not starting from scratch.

Actually I believe that Eric (EEnd) answered my question.

If you have the "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" Unchecked, then SolidWorks will display the file extension in the very top of the window (what ever Windows calls that top bar where the maximize, minimize and close buttons are).
I had this option Unchecked, hence the file extension issue.

With that option Checked, the file extensions are NOT displayed, and therefore the when importing iges files, solidworks/windows does not add in another .sldprt extension.
