Hi :

I have a question on the welding procedure . ASME IX is used for the welding procedure qualification but Supervised project under b31.3. Impact testing is required.

PQR: GTAW + SMAW;
Test coupon thickness: 23.83mm;
Deposited welds thickness: GTAW: 5.0mm; SMAW: 18.83

now: we need welding ONLY with GTAW.

I can use this PQR to support a WPS with impact testing, just for gtaw.

Thanks for your help.

Yes and No. For Sec. IX, You can use the PQR for GTAW only.....however, the min. base metal qualified is 5/8" with impacts. Your max weld metal qualified for GTAW is 10mm.

In addition, the min. base metal qualified is 5/8" for fillet welds as well.

And per B31.3 you are qualified to 1/2 T (approximately 12 mm) minimum, so you won't be able to use the gtaw process for full pen groove welds.
