We requested a quote for tube meeting CSA G40.21 350WT Cat 2. The vendor said they couldn't meet that but they could provide A500 Gr C that would meet the CVN requirements. ASTM 500 has a note that states that products manufactured to this spec. may not be suitable where low-temperature notch-toughness is important. This is precisely why we spec'd the CSA standard. (Actually there's a little more to the back story but I won't bore you with it.)Anyway, I suppose if they can actually meet the impact requirements then it will practically suit what we need but it seems to be they are going to roll it then cut some specimens out and hope they pass. My inclination is to pass on their quote and keep looking. Do any of you experts have some insight/suggestions?

If they have a history of doing this then it might be worth a chance.
If not then keep looking, there are other options.

Cat. 2 is only 0Deg. F, so it will probably suffice, assuming you are ok with the increased tolerance on the wall thickness.

David, yes I could live with that but I don't understand why they didn't suggest A1085. Well, for that matter, I don't understand why they could not meet the CSA spec. Even though they are in the US, I would have thought they could so they could sale to our friends north of the border. I looked at both specs and it seemed to me it's possible to dual certify it. I don't know anything about the practical side of hitting your chemistry. Probably harder than I assume. Also, I could have missed some mutually exclusive requirement. I really only looked at the chemistry.
