I haven’t done an ice load calc, ever so I was wondering if I can run my rough calc here by folks to see if I was on the right path. Please see the attached. I have a 3/8”x4” vertical plate for a trellis (multiple plates are spaced @ 8” oc).

The ice load that I came up with seems high and that’s why I want to check if I am doing something wrong here. I am coming up with 8.2 plf of ice on the plate. The project is in Chicagoland and I am using ASCE-7 05.

Other questions I have:
1. Is “td” the thickness of ice all around the member?
2. In load combination #2, if I have only D and Di, does that mean my combination is D+0.7Di?

Your calcs look ok, but I'm not in my office to check all of your factors. The weight looks about right. We do quite a bit of equipment design where the ice becomes a real factor - anywhere from 1" of ice to 3" of ice.

runner, thanks for looking into this. Could you also take a minute to look at the two questions I have?

Thanks
