Can parts of the IBC be applicable to transportation structures? (e.g. an elevated transit guideway, rail bridge foundations, ...) How about if a fixed guideway becomes part of a transit station/building?

Obviously other codes and standards may be more relevant, but I was wondering if and how the building code may also be applicable or enforceable under if adopted by the project or required under state law. Any experiences out there?

Thanks.

No direct experience but I wonder if at times you have a combined building/transportation structure of some kind you would essentially have to meet BOTH - in other words, both sets of codes/standards are minimum standards right?

So as long as you meet the two you would be fine. The problem comes in when the two sets of standards have mutually exclusive provisions.

The International Building Code is applicable to any structures adjacent or through a building, such as guide rail or a rail track. The IBC has no requirements for the transportation component but clearly regulate the building.
