I have two questions.

1) Can I specify a 1/4" PJP flare weld for a tubular butt connection if the tubes are 3/8" thickness.

2) If an aluminum connection is a CJP groove weld does the weld need to be checked if the member passes code checks? Main question here is are aluminum fillers weaker than aluminum shapes.

Thanks

LeonhardEuler,

You understand don't you what aluminium shape normally are heat treated, before you weld them?

Most aluminum will lose strength and ductility when welded. For instance, 6061-T6, a popular alloy used for structural application looses 40% of its tensile strength and 50% of its yield strength if everything is done properly. It is a disaster waiting to happen if the design is based on "as wrought" conditions instead of "as welded" conditions.

Yes, member passed code checks with reduced heat affected strength. Talking specifically about the weld geometry.
