how to set transparency to a map

The matlab help menus are not helping me figure out how to set the transparency of a matrix map I have. The problem is pretty simple. I have a 720x1440 matrix map that I am plotting, and I just want to make it slightly transparent. Everything I do seems to have no effect on changing anything. If someone could just give me some simple commands on how to do this OR an example where this has been done before (could only find 3-d surface transparencies in the help menu), then that would be great. thanks.
