How to model a guy-wire in ABAQUS? Should I use a connector?

I would use truss elements for that but connector is also an option.

Would the truss element work only in tension and be "lose" in compression? Same for connectors. Is there an option to select which direction of load would work for the wire?

Yes, for truss elements you can set "No compression" in material properties. In case of connector it's possible to specify uniaxial behavior in tensile direction only.

Spring elements are yet another option here.
