How to make alphabets on injection mold?

Hi guys

I hope someone could let me know how the mold maker machine alphabets on the tool so that the plastics (finish product) come out as the words protrude into the surface. Could they do it without an insert?

Ummm

If it is a steel mould, they cut the shape into the steel. If the steel is hardened the burn it in with EDM.

If it is cut directly into the mould, it is more difficult to change at a later date, that is if it needs to be changed.

To make lettering INTO the moulded surface the toolmaker engraves the electrode which makes the cavity (by spark eroding).

This leaves upstanding lettering on the tool which leaves impressed lettering on the part.

Changeable inserts made by the same technique.

Changeable inserts are more useful from the perspective that if there is a possibility you or your customer will change their mind, you can. Some companies make larger oval inserts with more room for part numbers and other verbage etc. for the part. Be sure to get tight tolerances on any inserts as no matter what you have to do to help your customer, you want your parts to look good.
