I have a project where subtasks are all integral numbers like 10 or 20d, but the total for the task group on the next indent level is a number like 124.89 days.

The calendar does not have any fractional work days. The tasks are related by simple dependencies.

What could cause this behavior?

Have you checked under "Options", the "Calendar" tab, to see if what you have listed for the "Hours per day" matches what you have set up for the Working Time? I believe that if you have more or fewer hours per day than your working time allows, you could get fractional totals on summary tasks, even though you have whole numbers for the sub-tasks.
