I'm trying to calculate stress in a bevel gear set and want to do an analysis in SolidWorks Simulation to confirm my hand calculations. But I dont get any results, it just give me the error code "simulation failed". I suspect that this is due to lack of contact between two teeth of the gear tooth. I have tried a lot different without much luck.

Does anyone have tips or a scheme to make such a simulation, fecs a recipe or something similar. Is there a setting to make the right contact between the gears?

Are you familiar with FEA methods?
- YES

What hand calculation did you do?
- Just easy one, checking the bending stress and tooth contact stress.

Which Simulation package do you have?
- At first I want to use SolidWorks simulation, but also have Ansys Worksbench 12.

Are the gear teeth modeled as they will be manufactured?
- Yes, this is gear drawings in solidworks from the manufacture.

I would strip off all the teeth except the ones needed for contact and use mesh refinement in the area of the teeth.

Create a split surface in the contact region.

Create a contact surface pair between the split surfaces above.

Mesh the contact area fine.

Use displacement control to bring them into contact.

Also, is the profile the gear manufacturer provided actually the profile of the teeth as manufactured?

And post a couple jpegs or png files of your setup showing BC, etc.
