How to determine valve Trim material/ numbers (other than googling it)

How do we determine TRIM numbers for valves (other than just googling it)? is there any specification for valves (ASME, ASTM, CSA. etc) ?

What if the valves don't come with drawings or data sheets? Also, last time I asked the vendor to confirm the trim #(for example if Trim 12CrHF is equivalent to trim 8) and confirmed with a random online trim chart.

I believe trim#s are different depending on the valve manufactures
 
API 600, 602 provide some direction on Trim/CNs.
