how to designate smooth plain rebars in drawing

I was told when I just started working that #4 is designation for deformed rebars and 1/2"Ø for smooth rebars. I couldn't find from codes, is that correct or where can I find this information? Thank you

why would you use smooth bars?

I would not use smooth rebars nowadays. But checking existing drawing and need to 100% sure what he is using.

To avoid confusion, I would specify 1/2" Ø plain bars. If you want the bars to slide as at an expansion joint, you should specify greased plain bars or plain bars wrapped in poly.

And if it is for a construction/expansion joint in a slab, they have some really good pre-fab systems on the market like diamond dowels that are worth a look.

The industry no longer uses smooth rebar, but ASTM A615, A706, A955, and A1035 also cover plain round bars used as dowels. If you are are specifying smooth dowels for use in concrete, they should be specified in conformance with one of these or another specification using the actual bar diameter rather than deformed bar designation numbers. The designation numbers are for deformed bars.

I use BAR 1/2"dia... BAR 15M for smooth bars and #4 or 15M for rebar... the BAR designation is from structural steel rolled shape and can be BAR 1/2x2 or BAR 12x50 or BAR 12x12 for that matter...
