How to create a shell for a RotoMold from a sheetmetal asm. 1

I am working contract using SE v17. I have been assigned a task of creating a mold for rotomolding a sheet metal asm. They have provided me with the asm. and its psm.'s

Being newly introduced to SE again after working on Pro-E the last 5yrs I am at a loss and wish to not expose my inexperience.

My question is: Is there an easy way to use the existing geometry of the sheetmetal asm. to create a shell?

I would provide the models if someone explains how to attach them to this posting.

Am I correct in thinking that in simple terms you want to create a single solid from the assembly and then subtract it from a block to produce a mold cavity ?
To do this you would create your block then bring in the sheet metal assembly as a Part Copy.
You can then use the boollean Subract function to take the Part Copy away from the block to produce a cavity.
You may have to put the Part Copy into a new part file first so that you can add bits to fill gaps, holes etc,
but the principle would still be the same.
Have a look in help for Part Copy.

Thanks for the response, but this is the problem I am faced with.


If I understand the boolean subtract function I would need a closed feature. My assy has an open side as well as holes.

What I ended up doing was inserting the .asm as a part copy into a part file and just used its surfaces as sketching planes. It isn't the most efficient way I am sure but the only way I can get it to work.

Let me know if I am wrong with my assumption.

OK the Upload was successfull but you've forgotten to
put in *all* relevant part files and therefore the .asm
is empty. The .asm only contains references and other
data neede for the assembly but not the parts themself.

So all in one basket (.zip) and then one is able to see

For the booelan feature to work you need a body. But AFAIK
you can't use an copied asm as body only a part (.par/psm)
will work.

yes it seems so. I played a little bit with it (seldom used)
and as long as no holes a.s.o. are in it it did work. Using
an U-shped channel you can't get the copied part as construction

BTW: I missed the part in your posting as you already got
your mold, so the my upload was not needed at all.

I wonder if suppressing those features (especially the holes) before insert part copy could be any help.

Alternatively, use SIMPLIFY PART in the part copy to take out holes and features you don't need.

The Simplify command is greyed out if the part copy is copied as Construction Body.
