I am trying to model a pre-axial concrete member subjected to impact loading using Abaqus. I modelled the axial load using smooth step in Abaqus Explicit; I couldn't apply the impact load using predefined field velocity as Abaqus requires it to be in the initial step. I tried BC velocity, but the results were unrealistic. Any ideas on how to do it?

You could use import functionality to change from Abaqus/Standard (where preload is applied) to Abaqus/Explicit (where impact is analyzed). Check the documentation chapter "Transferring results between Abaqus/Explicit and Abaqus/Standard" for more details regarding this capability.

That was useful. Thank you
I will look more into it
