How do you extract data from a DTED level-1 elevation file?

I am late in my response...
In case you are still interested, there is a free download available in the internet. The program is called MICRODEM and TERRABASE. It is excellent in importing DTED files and exporting to other formatss like ASCII xyz format, which will be understood by almost all packages.
