House Moving Failure
I'm surprised we don't see this more often. I've watched that show Massive Moves a lot, the guys doing the moving are just a bunch of cowboys typically.

About 10 years ago, I had to take a detour driving to work, because a bridge down the highway was "out". Later I saw a photo in the paper of what knocked that bridge out.
A mover had driven the house on the wrong route, the bridge couldn't take the weight, and collapsed as the trailer went over it.
Since the bridge was short (an irrigation canal) the house landed with each end across the bridge. If I recall correctly, the house even had a door on each end.
After some creative crane work, the house was lifted onto another trailer, driven to its original destination, and placed on the foundation for the proud new owners of the only house in Canada that was once a bridge in its own right. I often drive past the house's new location, not far from the re-built bridge.
Also, the house went up for sale a few years ago. I wonder if they even told the real-estate agent the story!

Sparweb, nice story. I think I may have seen that picture at sometime.

I've seen quite a few houses get moved but they were nothing more than a glorified mobile home to begin with. Nothing quite as substantial as this one.

The 11 ft 8 inch bridge is always a good laugh. The railroad instead of raising the crossing put in a steel beam to make it almost impossible to damage. Turning it into a vehicle can opener.

I love that bridge, there are some of those crash beams around here.

It's unlikely that it's the railroad's responsibility to raise the bridge or lower the street, more likely the municipality.

The 11' 8" bridge is in my back yard (so to speak) over in Durham, North Carolina, about a 20 mile drive from where I live.

So far as fixing the bridge (as opposed to fixing drivers which has proved to be un-fixable), the problem for the railroad is that is a main line passage with lots of rail traffic and, it is located in a fairly tight area down town with little to no room for a temporary parallel rail to permit construction. So the railroad doesn't want to do anything.

For the city, there are large sewer lines and other infrastructure beneath to road bed, so they don't want to do anything in terms of lowering the road bed.

In addition to the warning lights you see near the bridge in the videos, there are lights (and of course signs) further back up the road triggered by height sensors, but they have had a problem with the "NOT ME" exception overriding receipt of the warning. I heard there are pokeymons on the other side of the bridge.

There has been some discussion of closing the road under the bridge, but Durham prizes it's entertainment venues and has developed into a quite a performing arts mecca.. and has quite an artistic draw. They just need to put judges there to rate the artistic merit of the crashes......

This bridge is 11 feet 4 inches tall. The truck is 13 feet 6 inches tall.

This is not the infamous 11'8" bridge but a relative....
