Heating load

Hope you haven't given up on getting a reply. I see no one has replied.
I thought about your question and it seems reasonable; however after reviewing the heating and cooling load calculation sections of the ASHRAE handbook, I think I see why there can be no simple"heating load check" tables as for cooling. Perhaps you should post your question in the ASHRAE codes forum in the hopes that a knowledgable ASHRAE member on the handbook committe will respond.
It seems to me that any table for heating load would have to have a factor (indoor-to-outdoor delta T) in it. While with cooling, we are dealing with a fairly constant outdoor max temp; heating would vary greatly in terms of a minimum OA temp as a function of geographical loaction; as well as pevailing wind speed and direction. Heating calcs would also be less "forgiving" than cooling in terms of the consequences of undersizing; it would seem. For cooling we can easily account for internal loads for "typical" applications; but in heating, we should assume none of those are there.The load calculation then becomes one which takes into account just the structure itself (thermal shell) and the climatic conditions. Then depending on the OA requirements, there can be large variations.
That's about all I can "guess".
