I'm an asphalt plant engineer for an asphalt company in Wisconsin. I was wondering if anyone could guide me in the right direction to go about figuring out heat loss in both our asphalt cement tanks and the piping that goes along with those tanks. Thanks.

Kuhjo,

I recently just prepared a spreadsheet to do just that (Determine heat loss from an Asphalt Storage Tank). I had to go back to the basics of Heat Transfer: Flow around a cylinder, flow over a flat plate, heat loss to ground, natural convection inside the tank, conduction, etc. You may want to pick up a couple of Heat Transfer books if you want to get really technical.

Good Luck !

People like Tranter and Mueller (among others) have information of this type for help in selecting their plate coil and dimple plate (respectively) products. Google for yourself.
