Hi,

I am designing a new 20 000 sq. ft single storey building with different roof slopes and an inner courtyard. We are going to use multiple roof-top units. Nothing too complicated from a load calc. point of view. For this reason, I want to use this project to use HAP for the first time.

I was wondering if HAP will be able to model an interior courtyard and account for shading effect of the sloped roof will have on the walls adjacent to the inner courtyard?

Thank you for the input,

HAP can be tricked into simulating that situation, as can most other simulation programs. Adjacent-building shading is not a direct input, nor is the concept of an interior courtyard. You would have to do some extensive geometric calculation and come up with an equivalent horizontal and vertical shade to match the situation, and you can monkey with the wall and fenestration coefficients as well.

Of course, if you're doing this for LEED or anything else that requires ASHRAE 90.1 appendix G, be prepared to defend your work.

eQuest is much more flexible, but I'm not sure if it can accomodate a couryard directly or not... Maybe someone else knows.

One other comment: If you've paid for HAP, e-mail tech support. They're super. If there's a way around it, they will know it. Here's the HAP 4.2 manual, by the way:

Oh, and referring to your original post again, modeling the eaves (roof overhangs) is no problem. It's the morning and evening shade from the opposing side of the courtyard that will be difficult.
