Hi,

When would you need a grounding strap for a fan. The fan in question is a 3.50A, 28VDC Fan from Ametek. The fan is not bonded to the structure where it is installed and the only ground is from 28VDC return.

Thanks,

While there is no obvious danger given the facts presented, one could imagine that certain failure modes in the 28Vdc source could introduce dangerous voltages to the fan, so grounding the chassis is probably a good preventative measure, as would be a GFI on the AC side.

Suggestion: With the nowadays EMI control, the grounding may be required if you have high Electromagnetic Interference emissions exceeding the FCC or similar standards.
