Hello all

What does the number ASTM Grain size 0, 1, 2 signify?

Does it signify number of grain boundraies the examiner can see in a given unit length (Say Micron)?
 
The ASTM Grain Size Number N is defined by ASTM E-112 as

N = (log n/log 2)+ 1.0000

where n is the number of grains per square inch at 100x

It used to be compared visually with published charts, but modern software is available that can calculate and return ASTM Grain Size Number.

As gohead mentioned, the ASTM grain size scale was established by ASTM to provide a quantitative comparison of grain size for metals and alloys. The higher the ASTM grain size number, the finer or smaller the grain size.
