I jsut recieved my HP version of the nvidia FX540

There are warnings all over saying "void if not used in an HP machine.

It says to download my drivers first. There is a CD, but should I just do the one from the SWx website right away? And will that update my BIOS automatically?

I've never done this before so I'm pretty nervous about screwing this up....

But it look like a moot point. The card isn't compatible with my mother board. My exisitng ATI card has three "prongs". The slot has actual dividers in it. My new HP/nvidia card has a single wide "prong". I'm not sure what the hell to do about it!

The top one is my ATI....

MMIke,

The FX 540 is PCI Express. I am guess your motherboard and ATI card are not. PCI Express is supposed to be backwards compatable with a standard PCI slot......But I am know computer expert.

Crap balls stink poop....

Just dug out the box for my ATI. Yep. AGP 8X to be exact.....

So.... am I completely screwed? Can I somehow get a PCI onto my motherboard? I have an ASUS K8V-X

Wait.. I posted too soon. My mother board has PCI slots, but they still don't look compatible. Is PCI different from PCI-e?

PCI & PCIe are not interchangeable. Unless you upgrade you motherboard to one with PCIe slots you are SOL. See if you can exchange the PCIe card for a PCI version, say the FX500.

THe "video Interface" must be PCI-e if you want to use the 540FX. Otherwise if its like the link above you will be using the AGP slot.

Well there's a couple hundred down the tubes.... because I opened the package, the place I bought it from won't take the card back.

Sell it on-line. Try to make some money back dude.

Make sure to tell the place you got it from that the won't be getting any more of your business. And no more business from the few thousand CAD professionals that frequent this forum.

This is exactly why I throw my money at people who know a thing or 2 about these magic boxes... rather than try to build from scratch. Hope it works out for you.
