I am trying to analyze a channel to see if it can handle a 100 year flood event in our area. We have LDD but it doesn't have this kind of capabilities. Is there any freeware/shareware software available for this type of study?

Try going to and downloading the free sampler. This helps me do my homework in hydrology class, and we do stuff similar to what you are doing.

Bayou is right. The hydrocad is good for hydrology, particularly basin routing, but HEC-RAS is the way to analyze a stream for capacity and flood elevation. I havent yet tried to analyze a reach or reaches using hydrocad, so I couldnt totally rule out its usefulness.
